Since this Novembre 12, 2025.
the company Ryanair is "mobile-app blackmailing". That is to say that
without installing their mobile app on your private phone, you will not be able to travel.
it seriously hinders your private life and even goes against the
GDPR !.
First, when booking on their website, This radical change is absolutely not put forward. You can simply, as usual, book a flight. If you do not pay attention to the tiny information that scrolls down, you'll miss it.

Personally I did not finished my booking, but it seem that you can finalize, and only after, realize that it require to install a mandatory application !
In their justification, they claim that this new method, that is to say the forced installation of the application, will allow you to have better flight information.
There are already so many things that exist for that:
- e-mails
- websites
- stewards
- Phone numbers
- RSS
- etc..
They also mentions that this will reduce the environmental impact by eliminating 300 tons of paper per year.
If the intention is ok, the method is questionable. (advising: yes, forcing: NON !)

Since several years, I have rarely printed my ticket, I display the qr-code on my phone. And it works very well and there is no risk of safety in it.
Ryanair lists several scenarios inherent to the use of an electronic device.
That is to say, no more battery, malfunctioning device, etc...
For some case, they offer you to print it for you at the airport itself.
But the "funniest" is the case of the following figures they describe.
What about passengers who do not have a smartphone or tablet?
They also propose to print the ticket.
But what happens if someone has a phone but does not want to install the application ?
Will they check, frisk, search in the pockets to see if the person has a phone ??
And what will happen if a traveler declares that he does not have a smartphone? But at the same time, this one ring in front of a RyanAir agent ? Will Ryanair refuse the trip to this passenger ?
But the most important question
that no one raises in the other articles related to this case is:
is installing a non-local and non-opensource application is so trivial ?The answer is clearly
NO ! for a multitude of reasons that deprive your right to private life as the GDPR is normally supposed to protect.
For those who would like to know more, I invite you to stay tuned to this blog, in a while we will held conferences that will cover the why.
In the meantime, keep in mind (like say the old CyberSecurity adage)
if it is free, it is you then the product.
And indeed, you must not lose sight that developing an application like this is not free.
In addition, this application, which requires a data-connection on your part, must actually run on servers and therefore they have to pay electricity, maintenance, etc...
For our part, here we are blocked.
Therefore we will not fly with them.
We will not accept blackmailing.
